We apologize for the infrequency of our posts. Things have been busy here.

Samuel was weighed on Thursday and he is up to 10 lbs., confirming our suspicion that he has been growing. (Maybe soon he'll fit into his giant diapers.) All our friends with toddlers love that he is so tiny, but to us he's starting to look pretty big. He now likes to walk around the house facing out so he can enjoy the scenery: lights, shiny black appliances, and Mom. Best of all, he started to "smile" this week -- gas or not, it's pretty fun.

Since Samuel's arrival we have been so amazed with how helpful and generous all of you have been. Clothes and books and helpful advice and dinners. Oh the dinners! Our freezer runneth over. We cooked for the first time this week, but we didn't really need to. The freezer is still well-stocked with lasagna and macaroni and cheese. Anyway, thank you all very much for making his arrival so easy for us.

Here is Samuel during one of his rare (happily becoming less rare) wakeful periods. Click on the small photos to see large versions.

Samuel & Nana

Samuel is one week old today, and it's time to say goodbye to Nana, who has been here since the Baby Countdown was 1 day. She has been so wonderful to all of us, especially Samuel, and it will be sad to see her go back to Virginia. We are going to miss her cooking and cleaning, but mostly (if I may be sappy for a moment) we'll miss her loving. Lucky for us, Nana retired this year and we'll be able to see her much more often than usual.

(In this photo you can see Nana's one flaw -- she got her master's degree from the University of Virginia, and insists on wearing that shirt in an attempt to corrupt young Samuel.)

Mable, meet your little brother.

Mable has shown some interest in Samuel and given him a few kisses on the head. Mostly though, she loves that people are talking baby-talk all the time now.

Samuel continues to be very happy here at home and seems to be getting the hang of his two main jobs -- eating and... well, you know what his other job is.

Saw Little Miss Sunshine today in an attempt to laugh the baby out. I think all three of us would give the movie a thumbs up.

Today: a drive on scenic bumpy roads and a visit to the free library where the librarians couldn't believe I was old enough to be the future father.

Today in my classes we did an activity that involved me asking a series of questions that everyone had to answer. Beth was having fun reading them and answering them on our walk this evening. Her answer to the question "Who would you most like to meet?": The Baby.
