we like snow.

Beth has been pining for spring, so I thought I'd remind her of what our yard will look like come spring. Some of you have heard the story behind this picture, but for those of you who haven't, just know that Beth was not very happy that I was fussing with the camera while she was about to fall into that knee-deep mud. I think she was the only tramper in New Zealand to make it out of the woods with clean feet.

Mount Sunapee, New Hampshire
One of our favorite things to do on the weekend is to sit on the couch, drink coffee, and listen NPR. This is the first weekend in a while when we didn't have to do anything, and this has, consequently, been a good morning. For starters, I rocked the house on this weekend's Sunday Puzzle with Will Shortz. (It always helps me when the call-in player is slow.) And then they did a good little story on a band called Okkervil River. Okkervil River made one of my favorite albums from this year, Black Sheep Boy. (Get some mp3s here if you're interested.) The Okkervil River story, all the other year-end lists, and this leisurely morning have inspired me to give you a little taste of my favorite things from 2005.

Hearing: Iron & Wine's Woman King (mp3 of the title track via The Crutch) and In the Reins EPs have been staples. I think my favorite musical discovery of the year has been Destroyer. My favorite song, without a doubt, is Fistfull of Love by Antony and the Johnsons. I searched high and low for an mp3 of it, but had no luck so maybe I'll upload one sometime. Maybe. And finally, after a couple years of not seeing any live music, Dan treat us to two great shows this year at Dartmouth's Friday Night Rock.

Reading: I have had almost no time to read this year. It's a shame, I know. But I have really come to love Ted Kooser's weekly column, American Life in Poetry, which comes to me via email every week. My favorite of the year is Ruth Stone's crushing poem, Another Feeling. Speckled Trout by Ron Rash is also worth reading.

Watching: One word: Netflix. Our queue is ridiculously long -- 110 entries. I'll let you know how number 110 (Corpse Bride) is in, say, 2010.

Happy New Year.
