For the first time since work began on the house we set a goal... and accomplished it. That goal was: install the toilet. As of about 6:30 this evening there is a working, flushing toilet in our house.

We spent Saturday tiling around the base of the toilet and installing the sheet rock around the toilet area. We gave the tiles last night and most of today to set, and then headed back over to finish the job. All the tile was solidly where we left it, which was a relief, and installing the toilet was one of the easiest things we have done so far.

This means that we start moving in next weekend. Yes, we're excited.

(Also: thanks everyone for the nice/funny/helpful comments you've been leaving. We appreciate it.)

Welcome back to what has become the weekly house update. We put the floor into the bathroom this weekend, with Dan, Ann, and Sadie's help. That means that next weekend we can start putting in sheet-rock and cement backer-board in preparation for tiling. These days it feels like we spend more time standing around and planning our next step than doing actual work.

Our favorite thing about the new house has to be the neighbor's huge black dog who comes out when we arrive and commences to bark at us for an hour straight. At 8:30 a.m., all that barking is just wonderful.

Another weekend of work at the old Morrill place. We started putting the floor in, and we're off to a good start. I thought we might have the floor finished this weekend, but we only got the joists put in. Progress is always slower than you think it will be. In one of my summer classes we talked about the human tendency to have unrealistic expectations. When you're planning you never plan for set backs because the plan exists as an ideal.

Tiling 1-2-3 by the wonderful folks at Home Depot lists three categories of tilers: Novice, Handy, and Expert. They give a time estimate for each project based on your skill level. I want to classify myself as "Handy" for the custom shower project we will soon undertake, but I should probably give myself a more realistic rating, like "Sub-Novice" or "Fool." Time estimate: 6 months.

Really though, things are going well. Just slow. Yesterday we found a really nice antique door hidden beneath some wood paneling that a previous owner had nailed to the really nice antique door.

We finished the plumbing in the bathroom this weekend, and nothing seems to be leaking. I think we'll put the floor in next weekend, and walls too if we're lucky.

The first week of school was great, but I was so tired by the end of the day on Friday. I need to spend today getting ready for next week.
