North Rye Beach, New Hampshire (Nikon Coolpix 4500) After reading this article on jazz and digital music stores, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels that stores like the iTunes Music Store haven't got it right yet. When you buy music through the iTunes Music Store you get all the great music that you were after, but you don't get the book that comes with the CD. I love reading liner notes, looking at pictures of the band, and knowing the names of the musicians. The lack of liner notes and information is probably the biggest thing holding me back from using the iTunes store. I know that the sound quality isn't quite as good when you download music, but when I don't get the book I feel as though I'm being ripped off.

Rye North Beach, New Hampshire (Nikon Coolpix 4500) This is Beth's last week of summer, so we went to the beach on Tuesday. In the rain. Oh how I love the beach when it isn't hot.

Portland, Oregon (Nikon Coolpix 4500) Beth and I had a great weekend. First, we smuggled ourselves and some duraflame® Hardwood Charcoal through Smuggler's Notch to see Stephanie and Morgan. We played Yatzee and Pictionary, which was fun except for the last Yatzee game when Morgan cheated. At least I think he was cheating, because I've never seen anyone roll three Yatzee!s in one game.
Next we saw Dan and Ann's new home where we grilled using more natural hardwood charcoal and enjoyed a growler of Leather Lips IPA from The Tap. The highlight of the day was helping Dan achieve his vision for his new backyard. When Dan is using his loppers you had better stand back. { Monday, July 26, 2004 | Comment # }
Portland, Oregon (Nikon Coolpix 4500) I cannot get enough of Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France. For those of you who aren't watching, Lance won an individual time-trial today on L'Alpe d'Huez, missing the record for the climb by 1 second. Lance is now 3:48 ahead of his closest rival, Ivan Basso. The announcers think Lance has number six in the bag, but I'm still on the edge of my seat.Great photo: The New American Gothic. { Wednesday, July 21, 2004 | Comment # }
Portland, Oregon (Nikon Coolpix 4500) I can't wait to not get one of the new iPods.
We are joining the Concord Food Co-op today, supporting a Main Street business even though Concord is determined to drive all of Concord's consumers to The Mall where you will not be bothered by overzealous ticketing. It's raining here and we're having

Clay Hill Farm, Cape Neddick, Maine (Nikon Coolpix 4500) Sarah's wedding was wonderful. Perfect. Beth is now suffering from post-wedding depression and asking if Sarah can get married again next weekend.

Beth on Mt. Eden, Auckland, New Zealand (Lomo LC-A) Don't forget: my little sister gets married tomorrow.
This guy invented a fun game -- The Amazon.com Knee-Jerk Contrarian Game. It's easy to play: go to Amazon.com, look up your favorite book/cd/movie and sort customer reviews so that the worst are first. Slanted and Enchanted - Pavement: "Don't buy this. Please, just don't do it. You may as well set fire to a 20 dollar bill or gouge your eyeballs out. Buy something worthy! " Remain in Light - Talking Heads: "Despite its critical success, I think this is one of TH's worst efforts. From beginning to end, the whole album sounds like one big mush. Conventional song structures are almost entirely replaced by a polyrhythmic goulash of sound which doesn't offer memorable melodies, hooks and songs." and the best of all... Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan: "This album is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. After four weeks of listening two or three times a week, and now I've come to the conclusion that it's not a fault with me as a listener. Although I've never listened to Dylan before, I bought this album on a reccomendation from a friend (he was at one time very popular, I hear), and I feel everything about it is terrible: the lyrics, the music, his annoying voice... and after a while, it becomes difficult to distinguish the individual tracks, because every song sounds identical to all the others. Here is a selection of some of the awful lines, that shipwreck in my mind every time I hear them: > "People tell me it's a sin / that no-one feel(s?) too much within / I still like to believe she was my twin... / Then I lost the ring... / She was born in spring." > "I muttered something uneasy under my breath / She studied the lines on my face / I must admit, I felt a little uneasy / as she bent down to tie the lace / of my shoe." > "Be careful not to touch the wall / there's a brand new coat of paint / I'm glad to see you still alive / you lookin' like a saint."" { Saturday, July 10, 2004 | Comment # }
One Tree Hill Domain, Auckland, New Zealand (Lomo LC-A) Concerning movie ratings:
If it's a +, that means that we think it was worth seeing. When was the last time we didn't like a movie? We saw Hope Springs while in NZ and it was stink. But that didn't make our movie ratings list. We have a lot of +'s because we only go see movies that we think we are going to like. I'm not going to go see White Chicks because I know it's going to be terrible. We did add a ~ to the system the last time people complained, but that's as far as I go. In space there is no center, we're always off to the side. { Thursday, July 08, 2004 | Comment # }
A Windowsill in Portland, Oregon (Nikon Coolpix 4500) Ever heard of The Books? Yeah, me neither until recently. They're a band from North Adams, MA and one of the guys thru-hiked the A.T.
Here's this from a Pitchfork interview: Pitchfork: You hiked the Appalachian Trail, is that right? I felt sort-of the opposite on my thru-hike: I missed music like hell. I remember nearing a town in Tennessee, hearing The Eagles' Take it Easy and feeling elated. That's how much I missed music. I also tried to remember songs from beginning to end, music and lyrics. It's harder than you think. Phish's Rift and The Beatles' Maxwell's Silver Hammer were, for whatever reason, the songs most often stuck in my head. { Wednesday, July 07, 2004 | Comment # }
Auckland, New Zealand (Lomo LC-A) Has anyone I know read Ulysses? I bet Ann has. This guy is posting the entire book on his web site, one page per day until June 14, 2006. Am I ready to make that kind of commitment?

Auckland, New Zealand (Lomo LC-A) This morning after our coffee we walked up to the Oak Hill fire tower, and if you can handle swarms of mosquitoes and horseflies (I can, but barely), it's a very lovely walk. The state has a warden posted up there looking for fires and he pointed out all the Concord landmarks. I haven't been up on Oak Hill since I was very little -- so little that I don't remember ever being up there -- so today's walk was the start of our rediscovery of Concord, and New Hampshire as a whole. We must try and find the good things around here and ignore the fact that our hometown continues to become one big Walmart.
In honor of New Hampshire, the site is now sporting a new title: We Like Snow. (Mad props to Frank for the idea. It's much better than the runner-up, We Like The Weirs.) { Thursday, July 01, 2004 | Comment # } |
