Beth, Hiram and I climbed Eisenhower this last Sunday. As you can see, there were no views and we were thankful for the cairns. A hiking nerd with an anemometer told us the wind was blowing 70 mph on top, and I think he was right. We took the Edmands Path, which gets a nice review from the AMC White Mountain Guide: J. Rayner Edmands, the pioneer trail-maker, relocated this trail 1909. The rock cribbing and paving in the middle and upper sections of the trail testify to the infinite pains that Edmands took to construct a trail with constant comfortable grades over rather difficult terrain. Most of his work has survived the weather and foot traffic of many decades well, and the trail retains probably the best grades and footing of any comparable trail in the White Mtns. It is nearly always comfortable, and almost never challenging.{ Tuesday, October 28, 2003 | Comment # }
I think the Sox loss expended my annual allotment of sports emotion. I don't even care that my third-ranked Hokies were slaughtered by West Virginia the other night. It was embarrassing, yes, but I don't really care. Maybe they'll learn how to play football before the Miami game this week. { Friday, October 24, 2003 | Comment # }
It's a good day when your uncle sends you a package with a CD and a sweet movie. Yesterday was a good day. Today though, it says that Portland's Elliott Smith has killed himself. His song "Needle in the Hay" plays over the terrible suicide scene in The Royal Tenenbaums. Here (2.5 MB mp3) is another of his songs. { Wednesday, October 22, 2003 | Comment # }
Intolerable Cruelty is a Coen Brothers film? How did I miss that? I'm glad I stumbled across that important tidbit, because the ads want me to think that the movie sucks. { Tuesday, October 21, 2003 | Comment # }

I was in Lebanon again today -- visiting UVTI -- and I decided to drive over to Hanover afterward to take a walk up to Velvet Rocks Shelter. I didn't spend much time at the shelter once I got there because someone was there and asleep at twelve o'clock, which was too bad because I wanted to read the register. Even so, I had a very nice walk and was reminded of the two previous times I had been up to that shelter -- once with Dan, Ann and Beth to eat cheese and tomatoes on baguette (Dan probably skipped the tomatoes, actually), and once when returning to my thru-hike after a week at home nursing my infected foot. { Tuesday, October 07, 2003 | Comment # }
Still going through some old photos from Oregon. This was taken in Newport. I was a gym teacher today and we went mountain biking. Mountain biking is really cool, and I guess it's a feather in the school's cap, but dodge ball is still the best gym game. Here's a fun way to waste some time. { Monday, October 06, 2003 | Comment # } |
