I just saw Stephen Malkmus riding his bike down the street, dressed head to toe in varying shades of green. He saw that I recognized him and we exchanged glances and knowing nods as he cruised by. The bad news: S.M. was not wearing a helmet to protect his precious melon with all those good songs rolling around inside. He should think of his fans and be more careful, even if that means mussing his long golden locks. Also: Travis is staying with me while Beth is away, so Bachelor Week is in full swing. Last night we left all the dinner dishes on the table to kick things off. Today we will be leaving the seat up, and tomorrow we will put our dirty clothes on the floor. { Tuesday, May 27, 2003 | Comment # } Travis is back in Portland! { Thursday, May 22, 2003 | Comment # } At work, we love educational CD-ROMs. Love love love them. Even more than free donuts. One new CD set that just thumped onto my desk this week tells me how we're changing from a stove-pipe organization to a matrix organization. I'm pretty sure the release of these CDs was timed to coincide with the release of the The Matrix Reloaded, but that's not the funny part. The funny part is that a little computer animation introduces the matrix concept with the green falling numbers from the movie. The movie about false reality. The movie about humans being used as batteries. The movie about mind-control. Is that really a connection they want to exploit? { Wednesday, May 21, 2003 | Comment # } After work, I rode over to The Crystal Ballroom and picked up a couple Built to Spill tickets for later in the month, and then to good 'ol Powell's to buy some teaching books. Here's what I bought, and all you teachers can tell me if I chose wisely or not so wisely: » The Elements of Teaching by James Banner, Jr., and Harold C. Cannon » The Disciplined Mind by Howard Gardner » Earth in Mind by David W. Orr Greg recommended a couple books he thought would be good for me to read, but Powell's didn't have those in stock. As I wait to hear if I have a job I'll have time to read anything that you (yes you, Mom, Ann, Nan, Morgan, and Steph) might suggest. { Monday, May 19, 2003 | Comment # } Change of plans: I'm going to become a jazz drummer. { Sunday, May 18, 2003 | Comment # } Happy birthday to you, David Byrne. { Wednesday, May 14, 2003 | Comment # } When we move I am going to miss coffee breaks at Stumptown. They have the best coffee in Portland (made with a french press) for just a buck, it's only two blocks from my office, and they play great music. I've never seen Starbucks get reviews like this. My coffee break group is starting to look for a replacement. It's an important decision, because you never know how long you're going to be going on break together. There are break groups in my office that have been "going steady" for 30 years. I had to switch break groups once, but I don't think I hurt any feelings. { Monday, May 12, 2003 | Comment # } There's something about seeing a cop write a ticket for a woman on a bike that just ruins your day. Especially when it's National Bike Month. { Thursday, May 08, 2003 | Comment # } We had dinner at Zinc Bistro last night with a couple friends. Beth got her meal free because her birthday is in a few days. She was worried that someone would sing to her so I promised that no one would sing, and then I broke my promise and sang. We had to sing when her dessert came with a candle, right? Only two days until Beth's birthday, and still no iPod. I'm starting to think all of you want Beth to be sad on her birthday. I can try and cheer her with more singing, but that's not going to work forever. { Thursday, May 08, 2003 | Comment # } Here are the Wu-Tang names of some people that I know who read this web site: Beth Morrill = Flailing Fanatical Killer Marybeth Morrill = Erratic Assassin Hiram Morrill = Chocolatey Shatner Maryanna O'Neill = Cybernetic Tiger Dan Mielcarz = Homicidal Terrahawk Ann Sharfstein = Tha 23rd Buchan Morkon Chase = Victorian Cow Stephanie Chase = International Cow And the name of one person I know who runs a lot and does not read this web site: Doug Lunderville = Inscrutable Drama Queen [Inspired by this] { Wednesday, May 07, 2003 | Comment # } It's a sad, sad day for NH. { Sunday, May 04, 2003 | Comment # } |
