we like snow.

Beth and I had an excellent little vacation blessed by warm, dry weather.  California is the best.  Just about everything the world has to offer is in California.  Well, everything except cheep gas, which you can only get in Georgia.

It turns out that Gordon Smith, Republican Senator from Oregon, helped shoot down the plan to drill for oil in the Alaska wildlife refuge. The Muskoxen thank him. You can too.

We're packing our bags tonight for our trip to California next week. We have to do it tonight because tomorrow Beth has to watch Friends and I have to watch Scrubs and ER. Then Friday we'll be going to the opening night of the Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks tour. We will all cheer when he sings the line "Vanessa from Gresham" because Portland is in the know, and the rest of the country ain't. (Actually, Dan picked up on it too, but he's always in the know.)

Sex Mob Does Bond is good packing music. As is Richard Buckner.

Last night:
Ring-ring... ring-ring...
Erin: Hello?
Jake: Hi Erin, it's Jake. How are you?
Erin: Uhhhh.

I didn't make it all night. I called it quits at 3:45 after prodding from a very sleepy Beth.

2:28 a.m. and still going strong. I'm enjoying a fine "Belgian Style Golden Ale" from North Coast and reading The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell. Page 47 starts a new chapter, and it starts like this:

It all started in 1999, when Joanne McGlynn's media literacy class at Concord High School in Concord, New Hampshire, invited all the presidential candidates to speak.

Note the time. It's midnight. Like the fool that I am, I'm going to try to stay up all night. Just for fun and because I have had no reason to do this since design projects left my life. Beth has already given in to sleep. I'll keep you posted as the night progresses. Maybe I'll post a photo of the sunrise if I make it that far.

There is not a single copy of My Side of the Mountain at Powell's, one of the largest bookstores in the country. I know it's a good book, but I didn't know it was that good.

You should try this recipe for mac 'n' cheese. When you're shredding the cheese required for the recipe you're going to be thinking that there must be some mistake. There's no mistake -- 3 cups of shredded cheese = so much binding goodness. Be careful though, because that second bowl really puts a hurtin' on your innards.

I got the link from Stephanie's friend, Joe Chellman.

The Cascades got 3 feet of snow this week. Good weekend to go skiing, right? Well, it warmed up enough last night for the snow to turn to rain, and the rain turned the fresh powder into dense, unskiable cement. Luckily, the area was offering an hour of free skiing to test the conditions and that was long enough for us to decide it wasn't worth the $30. We'll try again next weekend.

We took another Sunday drive to the coast, this time to Newport, home of Rogue Ales. At the brewery we had some mediocre food for lunch, but we weren't really there for the food. I showed off my willpower and passed up a $30 case of Russian Imperial Stout that normally sells for $84. There was a group of young dudes in there who were not exercising such restraint. When they left they had t-shirts, toboggan hats, frisbees, a baseball hat that looked like a crab, a case of beer, about ten posters, coasters, and they were attempting to bribe the bar tender so she would give them a wall-hanging the workers had down in the brewery. Where does such deep love for a brewery come from?
