we like snow.

Yes, Virginia Tech is in 3rd place if you listen to ESPN, and I do. So what if the BCS poll says they're in 6th because we play suck teams like Temple and Rutgers? All that matters is that VT is ranked and Oregon teams are stinkin' it up, so I have bragging rights in the office. Ducks? Beavs? Please.

This weekend:

1. Made it to the opening of Punch-Drunk Love Friday night, which was just great. In one hilarious scene Adam Sandler's character, Barry Egan, tells his brother in law that he doesn't like himself very much and he cries a lot. Barry then breaks down in sobs, and runs out of the room. My description is obviously weak. But I didn't know whether I should laugh or cry with him. Beth and I both cracked up, and continued to well after the scene was done. No one else in the packed theater thought it was funny and I felt bad.

2. Saturday afternoon we saw Bowling for Columbine and I have to tell all 4 of you who read this to go see it. You just have to. Look on the web site and find out where it's playing near you, and go. Once again, I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. One scene was so depressing that when Beth and I talked about it after the movie she cried again.

3. We took a walk on a trail on the West side of the city, and the fall colors were gorgeous. Not NH gorgeous, but about as good as we're going to get around these parts. As an added bonus, I got to eat chocolate chip cookies for lunch. Beth had plain bread. What's her problem anyway? Always go with the cookies. Always.

4. We went for a walk with our camera in our new neighborhood and took some pictures.

5. I got bored sitting in the car while Beth was doing some "quick" shopping and found a comb whilst rummaging through the glove-box. I used said comb to comb my hair in a jaunty, parted-just-so hair-do and waited patiently for Beth to return. She got in the car and pretended nothing was funny as I sat, grinning proudly, waiting for a laugh or at least a "you're funny" without the laugh. But I got nuthin'. You can imagine the scene.

It looks like I will be making a trip to Boston for a conference in April. I'll try to bring Beth if she can work it out with school, but either way I will burn a few days off and stick around for a while after the conference. Dan and Ann will be expected to meet me each night after the conference, with Doug (highlight the page this links to see the fun text) in tow, of course.

Good weekend:
Friday: Spoon 'til 2:30 a.m.
Saturday: Computer fixy, really good pizza (this is rare in Portland) at Escape from NY Pizza, and movie that I'll be thinking about for weeks and recommending to all my friends: Waking Life.
Sunday: A hike up to McNeil Point.

As of this morning, our computer is back in action. All we had to do was format the hard-drive and reinstall everything. No big deal.

A good book that is, thankfully, taking me a long time to read. It is funny and complex and entertaining and more. I think the author, Neal Stephenson, has been pegged as a sci-fi writter just because he has engineers in his books. OK, and a few instances of yet-to-be-invented technology, but really, I still don't consider it truly Star Trek convention class sci-fi. Plus, I have to think hard every time I try to say the title (Cryptonomicon) and I still say it differently every time, and that's pretty fun.

Beth had to help me put my shirt on this morning because I hurt my shoulder unloading the car and now it hurts like a son-of-a-gun. See, Beth doesn't need a real baby, because she has me! You should have heard me trying to pull my coat on after Beth had already left for work. The neighbors probably thought I was beating the dog or fighting a gang of teenaged Mexican-Canadians.

Our trip to Victoria was a success. We left Friday morning with no idea how we would get across the water to Vancouver Island or where we would stay once we got there. We had some phone numbers for B&Bs, but none of them were answering the phone. But weren't going to let that stop us from enjoying beautiful British Columbia, especially not during a Jubilee year!

We arrived in Port Angeles, WA and just missed a 12:30 ferry to Victoria. That gave us time to make some more phone calls, use the bathroom, walk Mable, get Mable's vaccination records faxed to us (who knew we would need those?), take some pictures, and eat four days worth apples (no fruit with seeds allowed into Canada). We were even able to secure accomodations at Gordon's Beach Farm Stay Bed and Breakfast before getting on the ferry.

I spent the time on the ferry worrying about my last trip to Canada when I was assaulted by a gang of teenaged Mexican-Canadians. Luckily, I had Beth and Mable with me for protection this time.

To keep this short, Victoria was wonderful. The landscape was just as you would imagine it would be, with rocky coastline and blue ocean, surrounded by mountains. Most of the people we met were great, especially our hosts at the B&B. The British influence was a refreshing change from the states, and it also made for killer fish and chips. I almost forgot to mention that we saw Orcas from the breakfast table.

Because our computer is down I can't upload the pictures just yet, but I will when I can. I'm still going to try and repair the busted computer before buying a new one.

Believe it or not, our two-year anniversary is in four days. Beth was nice enough to talk about it months in advance so I couldn’t forget. We are going to take a trip to Victoria, B.C. for the weekend. We have heard from just about everyone that it’s beautiful, and well worth the trip. We’ll drive up to Port Angeles, WA on the Olympic Peninsula and take a ferry across the Straight of Juan de Fuca. I can’t wait.

Now, for your listening pleasure: My Morning Jacket, live on KCRW.

In high school a friend of mine put a program on my calculator. That program printed a single message across the screen:

I got me fingy stuck in me bum.

I'm still using the same calculator, and I never deleted that program. If I ever want to crack myself up all I have to do is run that program, and I just did so. I hope you are laughing as hard as I am. If you're ever using my calculator and want to experience the fun first hand, the program is called CRUNCH.

Our computer died this weekend. I can't even get it to start Windows in "safe mode," whatever that means, after playing with it for about an hour last night. Sometimes it won't start the boot process at all. This happened for one simple reason: we sold our second computer. Now we need to consider either buying a new computer or going to the library a lot.

The news isn't all bad today. Last night we finally finished all our business with our old landlord, and she's giving us all but $100 of our security deposit back. At one point she had us worried that she was going to keep it all, so $100 isn't bad. I still think we deserved to get it all back, but I can live without the $100. Just to give you some perspective (and a good laugh), she told us that we should have vacuumed the carpet every day.

After getting that taken care of we went to an open-mic session to see a friend of ours play in public for the first time. He may possibly be the worst guitar player ever (besides me, that is), but his performance was extremely entertaining.

Pictures from Korea are here. Over the next few days I'll put up some stories from the trip. Most of these pictures were taken while walking around a huge (about 3 blocks x 5 blocks) open-air market in Changwon. You'll just have to imagine the smell of thousands of fish, squid, eels, and other sea creatures, some dead and others still alive and squirming.
