we like snow.

Funny things that the teacher Beth assists has done in the past three days (some or all of these may be untrue):

  • Practiced Karate punches in the classroom when she thought no one was looking
  • Asked Beth for a high-five because their class has 8 girls and 8 boys. (There was a slight mix-up that almost disrupted the balance when she thought that a girl named Ryan, sight unseen, was a boy. Whew!)
  • Called herself "Funkenstein"
  • Wore denim over-alls with a matching baseball cap, turned backwards
  • Did the Moon Walk when she thought no one was looking
  • Told Beth that the teacher's assistant is usually in charge of noogies, hehe.

onfocus.com : walking tour of portland ... I've seen this stuff, but maybe you haven't.

My commenting service disappeared mysteriously, so all of the old comments are lost. The only thing that seemed comment worthy was my choice of socks. Beth isn't the only one who doesn't approve of dark socks and shorts.

I hope the new service lasts a bit longer than the old.

Beth started work this morning at 9 a.m. Not kids yet, just her and the teacher making decorations for the room. They're having a pot-luck lunch to celebrate the first day of work. Now I'm going to have to make my own lunch and do other unpleasant things because Beth won't be able to take care of me. I'll get by, as long as I don't have to do the dishes.

It looks like Beth and I are going to be moving to a different part of town. Our rent went up and we were ready for a change, so we're packing up and moving to a smaller place in a four-plex North of where we currently live. We will be living near the Clinton neighborhood, which is inhabited by some folks Beth might classify as weird. ("Weird" is Beth's #2 favorite word. Her #1 favorite word is "love." Awwwww.) They (the weird-o's) are drawn by a theater that shows the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Friday night. That theater was actually a repelant for Beth and I, but we were drawn in by good Mexican food, a good coffee shop, a pub, one of the best video stores in Portland, and a small food co-op that has adobe walls and a weekly farmer's market. Future visitors should be warned that they will be sleeping on the floor because our new place is a one-roomer. Sorry.

I have recently taken to wearing dark socks with shorts. Laziness brought it about -- I change into shorts to bike home, but I don't change out of my work socks. Beth doesn't appreciate my keen sense of style and often asks me to change before we go out. Little does she know, I now wear the dark socks on purpose just to hear her say, "Jaaaaacob."

Last night Beth made pesto with the Basil she grew this summer. The Basil plants started slowly from seeds in our kitchen this spring, and now they are big and lush. They were starting to flower right before we left for NH, but Beth plucked the flower buds off because we thought they might ruin the end product.

Anyway, I would challenge anyone to make better pesto. It was really hot last night. Brutal, lay in front of the fan hot. Nonetheless, I ate until I counldn't eat no more. I like pesto, and I plan to get inventive with it's uses. Already, I likes to puts it on pizza, but every pizza place in the world worth its cheese does that. I'm thinking more along the lines of pesto ice-cream.

After getting stuffed I went to tutor my little 8-year-old buddy, Matthew. Matthew and I wrote a story about Bionical and Star Wars on the computer, and it's pretty good. They fought the space aliens, and bombed their city. I thought that might be an inappopriate topic and thought I should tell Matthew that not all "aliens" are bad and war IS bad and bombs ARE bad. But then he told me he loved coming to tutoring and that I was awesome, so we shall save that lesson for another day.

We got back home from out New Hampshire visit at about 12 a.m. Sunday night after a long day traveling. The beginning and the end of they day were the worst. We started out by waiting in 3 lines at Logan before finally finding the correct place to check-in, and finished the day waiting 30-minutes for our bus to come (which isn't that bad, unless you've been on a plane all day and it's 11 p.m. and you just want to get in bed).

But the visit home was great. Beth and I hadn't been back to New Hampshire in almost 2 years, and it was good to see all our New England family and friends. It was more than good. Beth is itching to get back for good, if that makes anyone feel better. I still feel like we have more to do in Oregon, so we'll see what happens.

The highlight of the week was, of course, Dan and Ann's wedding in Hanover on the 10th. It was a gorgeous NH day, and spirits were high. The ceremony was short and sweet (very sweet), and the celebration that followed... let's just say I lost my tuxedo coat, broke a cuff-link, and danced all night long.

    The other high points...
  • Morrill-O'Neill party on Monday. I think someone counted 27 people. We spent the day swimming and eating, in true Morrill style.
  • Welch-Dicky hike with Hiram, Pip, Roberta, and the Sturman family. We had good weather, and the views were outstanding. Little Emily and Leah did the whole thing with out complaining. (OK, they threatened to kill their uncle Hiram, but we let it slide.)
  • Seeing Megan (one of Beth's UNH roommates) and meeting her boyfriend.
  • Visiting our friends from Virginia Tech at Krista Marschner's house in Wolfborro, NH.

This is an analysis of someone with the first name Jacob:

"The name of Jacob creates a very quiet, practical nature and a clever and inventive mind. Being analytical and naturally studious, you are interested in a factual understanding of the mysteries of life. Your methodical nature requires that you like to finish what you start without interruptions and also to have everything in its place and properly organized. An ability to concentrate could take you into computer programming or accountancy or any work requiring concentration and attention to detail. You have, also, a flair for creative expression with your hands. You take life seriously and can be easily and deeply hurt and go into moods which can be quite extreme at times, causing much turmoil and unhappiness. Finding it difficult to join in conversation with those with whom you are not well-acquainted, you could feel quite alone and uncommunicative with new acquaintances or in a large crowd. As a result, you could be accused of being unfriendly. You desire so much to be understood, but your name has limited your verbal expression to such an extent that it is very difficult for you to divulge your innermost thoughts even to those closest to you. One of your greatest salvations is being out in nature, for it is there that you find the peace and serenity you so much desire. Physically you could suffer through tension in the heart, lungs, or bronchial organs, and also through intestinal problems, constipation, etc."

Very interesting. I won't say whether or not I agree with it. Do you? I especially like the constipation part.

    Now Elizabeth:

"Your name of Elizabeth gives you a very idealistic but passive outlook on life. You desire culture and all the refinements of life but you are inclined to live in your dreams. Although you would like to do many things, procrastination undermines your accomplishment and success in life. You do not like to create issues and will do anything to avoid a conflict. Making decisions is difficult for you without the support and approval of others. This name gives you a very sensitive nature, making you feel much that you do not understand. Your feelings are easily hurt, at which times you are inclined to withdraw and become uncommunicative. Although you desire the friendship and association of others, you find it difficult to express your thoughts through the spoken word, and others find you hard to get to know. It is much more natural for you to express your deeper thoughts in writing. Inner tension can deplete your physical vitality. You are inclined to indulge in rich foods that lack proper nourishment. The physical weaknesses due to this name centre in the heart and respiratory organs, and in the fluid functions."

I like the part about indulging in rich foods that lack proper nourishment. Ha!

Yet another reason to love Portland: I was riding my bike over the Hawthorne Bridge on the way to work, and half-way across the bridge someone had set up a table with coffee and doughnuts and was flying a homemade flag that read, "BIKES!" As I approached the mass of about 15 bikers someone called out to me, "Free breakfast for bikers!" Now that is cool.

Another neat thing about the Hawthorne Bridge is that some mornings when I ride over there is a Scottsman (kilt and all!) on the river bank below playing bag pipes, with the early morning fog rising off the river and surrounding him. It's a beautiful thing.
