MAX Vobiscum
Max Vobiscum FAQ

What is Max?

Max is a graphic programming environment for MIDI conceived at IRCAM, first commercially released by Opcode, and now supported and released by Cycling 74 and a pool of loving users. It is now officially called Max/MSP, which reflects the addition of digital audio processing capabilities.

What is Max Runtime and why would I need it?

Some of the files here are not full Macintosh applications, but just special Max files called collectives. Max Runtime is an application which provides the code backbone for the Max file to actually run.

The collective format is used here to keep file size down and to provide for backwards compatibility with 68K Macs. Because they are platform independent, they also provide for future compatibility (in theory) with PC and/or Unix platforms.

What do I need to run the files on this site?

You need:

  • A Macintosh computer (PPC model unless noted, running OS 8.1 and higher)
  • Opcode's OMS (Open Music System) extension (3.6 M)
You'll may also want:
  • A MIDI interface of some kind
  • A MIDI instrument of some kind

What does "Max Vobiscum" mean?

It's an oh-so-clever twist on the Latin farewell "pax vobiscum", meaning "peace go with you."
