Women Playwrights International (WPI) is dedicated to planning and convening the International Women Playwrights Conference, gatherings which have brought women playwrights and allied theatre artists, culture workers, and scholars together every three years in different part of the world since 1986. WPI is dedicated to maintaining ongoing International Women Playwrights Conferences every three years at different locations in the world, and to facilitating communications, meetings, interchanges, and activities among the International community of women in theater.

Is primary mission is to further the work of women playwrights around the world by promoting their works, encouraging and assisting the development of their works and bringing international recognition to their works.

BACKGROUND
The cornerstone and foundation of Civilizations and Culture of a people have always been defined through its art form, be it amongst others recognized for its masterpieces of paintings, statues and artifacts, majestic architecture buildings & bridges, or great works of music and literature.

The literary medium is one art form that can best reflect the story of its people and its customs. It is however to date one of the lesser appreciated imprints of our culture more so in Indonesia.

In many cultures, societies are seen through literary works predominantly of male writers - while not negating its value and contribution, WPI would like to highlight the literary (and potential) works of Women in Drama to complete the picture.

It is primarily with this thinking in mind that WPI would like to tap into the rich contemporary cultures of the people and encourage its emergence to the forefront, specially focusing on the potential works through the perspective of women.

JAKARTA CONFERENCE
The Conferences have been held every 3 years since 1988 (Buffalo, New York U.S.A) 1991 (Toronto, Canada), 1994 (Adelaide, Australia), 1997 (Galway, Ireland),2000 (Athens, Greece), 2003 (Manila, Philippines).

Jakarta, Indonesia has been chosen to host the 7th International Conference in 2006 in part due to a strong lobby from Indonesia to attract a wider international participation to the conference. In the current volatile global situation, Indonesia is seen as a middle ground where East can meet West and focus of the Conference Objectives can be given its due.
