William Zorach: the Swimmers
the Swimmers

As a couple, the Zorachs are unusual in the history of American Art. Born in the same year and dying within two years of each other, they held to a romantic vision of an artist's life. From the time they met in 1911, they dedicated themselves to fulfilling the idea of authenticity in life and art, evolving in the process of a mutually supportive relationship through 54 years of married life.

From very different beginnings, the artists were brought together while they were studying in Paris in 1911. Painting in NYC during the winters, at various country locations in the summers, and the summer of 1916 in Provincetown, the artists dedicated themselves full time to their art. As artists, they were distinctly different from one another. Mrs. Zorach was a painter and creator of tapestry and embroidered objects; Mr. Zorach was primarily a sculptor, but also a watercolorist and draftsman.

Themes in the work of both Zorachs centered on their own immediate life experiences: love, family, childhood, animals, joys and beauty of nature.
