BROWN MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ANNOUNCES 1998
AWARD WINNERS
Giblin named captain for next season
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Brown Hockey Association hosted its 1998 annual Brown Hockey banquet on Friday evening at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I. Along with honoring the coaches and players of the 1997-98 squad, four individuals were singled out for specific awards, and Paul Giblin '99 was named the captain of next year's squad.
Senior forward Damian Prescott, of Ipswich, Mass., was named the winner of the Class of 1936 Trophy, Brown's most valuable player award. It was the second year in a row Prescott received the honor. The trophy is awarded annually to that player, who, through sportsmanship, performance and influence, contributed the most to the sport at Brown. In addition, Prescott also received the Patrick S. Jones Memorial Trophy, Brown's coach's award. A captain of the 1998 Bears, Prescott etched his name in the Brown record book as a junior when he scored his 20th goal of the season in the final outing for the Bears. It marked the first time since 1977 that a Brown player had registered 20 goals in a season, and served notice for Prescott that he intended to complete his Brown career as one of the all-time best, which he did in 1998. He recorded 25 goals, and finished the season ranked sixth in the nation in goals per game (0.83). He also finished with the second most goals (18) in ECAC games in the league. A first team All-ECAC and All-Ivy selection, he netted the hat trick in a game at Providence College, the first Brown player in four years to score three goals in a game.
Senior defenseman Bob Quinnell was awarded the Charles A. Robinson, Jr. Memorial Trophy for Academic Excellence. Quinnell, a native of Coquitlam, B.C., has a double major in Economics and Organizational Behavior & Management with a 3.57 grade point average. The Robinson award honors the late Brown Classics professor and the trophy is given annually to the letterman attaining the highest academic average for the first seven semesters.
Brown's newest award, the James H. Fullerton Award, was established to honor a Brown first-year player as the Rookie of the Year. The inaugural award was given to Jon Zielinski, of Saanichton, B.C., who was also named as an honorable mention choice on the ECAC All-Rookie team. Zielinski steadily made his way up to Brown's top line alongside Prescott and Jeff Lawler during the course of the season and as the right wing, finished the year as Brown's seventh leading point-getter and top freshman. Senior goaltender Jeff Holowaty, of Regina, Sask., was the recipient of the Charles A. Lanigan Memorial Trophy, also known as the Brown Hockey Association Award for community service. The award is named after the late Brown trainer.
The evening was capped with the announcement that Paul Giblin, of Paramus, N.J., will be the captain for next season, as voted on by his teammates.
Brown completed its 100th anniversary season with a 13-16-2 overall slate, and in fourth place in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
