"I'm excited to move from an assistant's position to a head coaching job with the opportunity to run my own show," said Grillo. "I was extremely impressed by the people at Brown, and I'm excited to be given the opportunity to be head coach at one of the nation's top universities." In seven years at Vermont, Grillo recruited and coached three Hobey Baker finalists, four first-team All-Americans, two ECAC Rookies of the Year, and two ECAC Players of the Year. He helped coach Vermont to the 1996 ECAC regular season title and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996 and 1997, including to the Final Four in 1996. "Roger is recognized as one of the outstanding young assistant coaches in the country," said Roach. "He had a tremendous impact on the Vermont program where he was known as a tireless worker and an exceptional recruiter." His primary duties at Vermont included the organization and coordination of all aspects of recruiting, on-ice coaching, the planning of practice, the breaking down of game tape, and the coordination of the hockey program's involvement with local charities and community service programs. A 1983 NHL draft choice of the Vancouver Canucks, Grillo was a member of the University of Maine hockey team for two years (1982-84) and was the Black Bears' top scoring defenseman as a freshman with two goals and 11 assists. He graduated from Maine in 1986 with a B.S. degree in secondary education. Grillo began his head coaching career at Yarmouth High School, leading the team to three consecutive Maine state championships and being named Maine's High School Coach of the Year all three years. He went on to be the top assistant coach at Norwich University for one season (1989-90). A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Grillo and his wife, Wanda, have a son, Dominic. Grillo replaces Bob Gaudet, who was named the head hockey coach at Dartmouth College in April. -30- Bill Corrigan 1997-98 BROWN HOCKEY CENTENNIAL LET'S GO BRUNO!
